It is a common mistake to assume that all great music is made in The United States or Asia. Here is a list of seven European singers who have achieved international success.
Born in 1965, BjörkGuðmundsdóttir has enjoyed a four-decade long career as a singer, songwriter, producer and DJ. Arguably Iceland’s most famous musical export, Björk has had thirty singles reach the top forty on pop charts around the world. Björk has won five BRIT awards, four MTV Video Music Awards and a MOJO award. She is recognised for an experimental, electro-pop style with haunting lyrics. Björk incorporates aspects of electronic, dance, trip hop, jazz and contemporary classical music into her work.
Adele Laurie Blue Adkins skyrocketed to international success within a few years at a very young age. Born in 1988 in West Norwood, a suburb of London, Adele’s debut album “19” achieved international acclaim and has been certified seven times platinum in the UK and three times platinum in the US. In 2009 Adele won grammy awards for Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Adele has sold over one hundred million records, making her one of the best-selling singers of all time.
3. Ben Howard
A British singer, songwriter, guitarist and composer, Benjamin John “Ben” Howard was born in 1987. In 2013 he won the Brit Award for British Male Solo Artist and has performed at the main stage of Glastonbury and around the world. Known for his poetic lyrics and soulful melodies, Ben Howard takes inspiration from 1960s and 1970s musicians such as John Martyn, Joni Mitchell and Simon & Garfunkel.
4. Lianne La Havas
London born singer and multi-instrumentalist Lianne La Havas has won numerous UK awards and is achieving increasing international fame. Her debut album “Is Your Love Big Enough” released in 2012 won iTunes Album of the Year. Her soft vocals and heartfelt melodies are based on personal experiences and romances. Lianne La Havas has collaborated with numerous other artists including Willie Nelson.
Isabelle Geffroy is better known by her stage name Zaz. She is French singer-songwriter born in 1980 in Tours, France. Known for a mix of jazz, soul and acoustic, she is most famous for her hit single “JeVeux”. Zaz has sold over 3.4 million albums worldwide and is considered to be one of the most successful singers in Europe.
Swedish singer, Robin Miriam Carlsso (born 1979), is recognised by her artist name Robyn. She first emerged on the Swedish music scene in the mid nineties with her debut album “Robyn Is Here”. Her singles “Show Me Love” and “Do You Know (What It Takes)” reached the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. She was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2005 for her fourth album “Robyn”. Robyns singing style combines dances and pop styles with experimental vocals.
7. Ed Sheeran
Edward Christopher Sheeran is an English acoustic singer, songwriter and musician born in 1991 in the United Kingdom. Shortly after signing a record deal with Asylum Records, his debut album, “+” , was released in 2011. Ed Sheeran has achieved international recognition and has been certified seven-times platinum in the UK. Ed Sheeran has collaborated with Taylor Swift and Elton John, has won numerous Brit Awards and Grammy Awards and even made a cameo appearance on HBO’s infamous television series Game of Thrones.
