The Blue Moon Celebrates 78 Years with Five Nights of Shows

by

We Wrote the Book on Connectors at The Blue Moon ::: photo by Abbey

We’ve had some of the most memorable nights of our show going lives at The Blue Moon. And certainly some nights we wished we remembered more of too. And with 78 years under their belt, the same must be true for countless folks and Seattle’s beloved Blue Moon.

As they do every April, The Moon is celebrating their anniversary with a string of shows and we highly suggest you check out Seattle’s best dive bar and raise a glass to toast its continued existence. In an industry and city where surviving 10 years is a milestone, inching up on a century is unheard of. While all five nights have their own unique spin and celebrate different aspects of the Moon’s history, we suggest getting there early on Saturday April 14th for secret headliners “The Everett Shitkickers,” who we first saw at The Blue Moon many moons ago and who we’ve seen play some of their most memorable sets on the stage, under a variety of names.

Here’s the full rundown of the anniversary celebrations:

APRIL 12 : Diminished Men, Corespondents, Prom Queen – $6 APRIL 13 : We Wrote The Book On Connectors, The Fabulous Downey Brothers, Shitty Dudes – $6 APRIL 14 : The Everett Shitkickers, Mystery Ship, Deception Past – $8 APRIL 15 : Grateful Dead Tribute Show with Kuli Loach – $5 APRIL 16 : Opera On Tap – Live Opera By Professional Singers! – $5

Happy Anniversary Blue Moon and here’s to 78 more!

Photographic Evidence As To Why You Must Be At The Blue Moon Tonight

by

Beyond the crazy and fun photos I’m about to share with you, there’s really one very simple reason you must be at The Blue Moon tonight: it’s going to be the best party in town. There are no better bands for a rollicking, hilarious party in Seattle than We Wrote The Book on Connectors and A Gun That Shoots Knives–and that’s what tonight is going to be all about.  It’s going to be a spectacle, in the most fantastic of ways.

Junkface:

A brief word about Junkface. Beyond celebrating with two of our favorite Seattle bands, we’re thrilled that Portland’s Junkface will be making the trek north to the Blue Moon. Junkface played Sound on the Sound’s very first sponsored show at The Blue Moon and not nearly enough of you got to see them.  Back then we said: ”Junkface seems built for a place like the Blue Moon. They play scuzzy yet simple and accessible songs that span the spectrum of genres.” Despite the fact the band’s EP is only 7 songs and 19 minutes long, it is an often played favorite, even after two years.

Prom is Cancelled!

by

No fair–they totally cancelled prom! And We didn’t do anything wrong, it’s totally the economies fault.

Next week’s WE Prom featuring M. Bison and Tennis Pro had to be cancelled because the venue (King Cobra) shut down abruptly. Sound on the Sound was planning on donning their very best formal wear, a rare site indeed, and these are three great local bands and it was certain to be a wonderful, weird night–so we’re pretty bummed. No one throws a party like WE, so we hope Prom is able to find another venue.

If so, economy be damned–we’re buying corsages!

New We Wrote The Book On Connectors Album & Art

by

We Wrote The Book On Connectors  is unleashing their first full length album, Ride It Like A Turbo Horse , which is sure to be fun and frisky, like all that is WE related. The above delight is the first glimpse of the album’s art-work.

We guarantee you won’t want to miss the band’s album release show–November 15th at the High Dive, where they will be joined by equally merry-making  A Gun That Shoots Knives and M. Bison.

A Blue Moon Birthday Show: a Night for JJ

by

If Sound on the Sound wasn’t going to be half way across the country, there is absolutely no way we would miss this night at The Blue Moon. As modest and breezily witty as he is about it, JJ has done a great service to the Seattle music community with his work at The Blue Moon. He consistently books the best local line-ups in Seattle, as well as giving just about every up and coming band a chance on stage. Whatever you want to say about The Blue Moon, its role as a vital part of the Seattle music scene is undeniable, and we have JJ to thank for that.

Unsurprisingly, JJ’s got a great line-up set for his night, with ultimate party bands We Wrote the Book on Connectors and The Moondogies set to take the stage. It’s going to be a great night and be sure to buy the man of the evening a drink…we’ll be toasting him in Austin.

Congrats to Martha Our Sea Wolf Winner

by

Sometimes you’re destined to win something.

Not only was Martha the first to comment on our Sea Wolf poster give-away, it was her card we picked in our random final drawing.

We’re thrilled! Martha has super good taste in music and is an actual reader of Sound on the Sound. She’s part of our small but avid group of ChampBana readers. (okay there’s two of them, but we love the hell out of them…) She also was front row with us at Elvis Perkins last show in Seattle, when she happened to be in town. Hooray!

psst. And on a completely seperate note DAMN YOU H is for Hellgate and WE for the Hooray! I can’t stop saying it now.

Hooray! For the Best CD Release Party, Ever

by

A Gun That Shoots Knives have me firmly convinced that everything’s a little better when dressed in a ridiculous costume. The band’s triumphant homecoming and record release at the Blue Moon on May 19th was like going to the best house party, with a full bar and not having to worry about the clean up. After limping back to Seattle at 4:30 am that morning after a harrowing national tour courtesy of their van, AGTSK played two raucous sets, rocking The Moon well past 1am…. never once letting on how exhausted they must have been. The guys did let us know they were broke though, when “The Wheel of Decision” (more on that soon) landed on “buy the spinner a shot!” the boys said in utter seriousness… “that’s not happening man, we have five dollars to our name.”

full band agtsk

The Blue Moon was packed and looked much more like Halloween then mid-May. As revealed on the show’s kick-ass poster, the evening was not only a concert and a record release, but also a costume contest for the audience. The audience delivered, with at least a third of the full house in costume. If you’re curious, I went as a cow (complete with udders) and Josh went as a Moustache Rocker (in honor of WE who played the middle set of the night), including a freshly shaven molestache.  The band has often told me that they wished their audience would always dress up and as much fun as the audience seemed to have for the release, I hope the trend sticks. To add to the circus like feel of the night, there was a contraption called “The Wheel of Decision.” From time to time an audience member would spin said wheel, the band would hold their breath, and their fate was quickly sealed. The Wheel of Decision provided one of the best moments of the night, A Gun That Shoots Knives landed on “Swap Lyrics” and played a rendition of their song Literate Man with the words to the Theme from Gilligan’s Island. If there was a decent video recording of it from that night, I guarantee you it would be an overnight success on the YouTube.

 wheel of decision

Since being introduced to A Gun That Shoots Knives on New Years Eve, I have attended close to 10 performances and this was the boys at their very best. After a few weeks of touring the band was impossibly tight and their back-up vocals were sounding better than ever. Their two sets featured all of their favorites, and the audience merrily sang along to each and every one. I was also pleasantly surprised by We Wrote The Books on Connectors set, I’m loathe to admit that I just didn’t get or enjoy my first WE experience. But tonight, I got what all the buzz was about. These guys have so much fun on stage, it’s impossible not to have fun with them. They are magnetic to watch, each guy going slightly crazier than the next. Hooray indeed!

WE

One of the most memorable, enjoyable nights I’ve had in a long time. And all to celebrate a kick-ass release, by a kick-ass band! To see more photos of all the wonderfulness… continue reading.
