Jr. Jr.

“Nothing But Our Love”

A place of deep snows and a flagging manufacturing economy, Michigan feels a hard times place full of hardened people lately. So hearing that the new duo Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. hailed from Detroit came as a surprise, car-culture-referencing-name notwithstanding. The few songs I’ve been privy to up to this point sound straight out of the Portland house party circuit, a vivid blend of Nurses and Starfucker with the vocal sheen of Menomena. Case in point, the song “Nothing But Our Love” is a mesmerizing wonder of the avant-pop variety (with a just as mesmerizing video above), unconventional but still catchy. The not-a-care-in-the-world whistle that opens “Simple Girl” makes you envy this band’s mood before you’ve even heard a word. Either that or it makes you want to punch them in the face for being so damn happy.

Peep the video above and then head on over to Daytrotter for their session with Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr., one of the better sessions I’ve heard this year. Included is an impressive version of the Beach Boys “God Only Knows.”

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. hits Seattle on Monday September 6th for the RUMBLE at the Havana Social Club. Care of them and Mesita, maybe we can hang on to summer just a little longer…

August’s RUMBLE

rumble-august

Monday’s edition of the RUMBLE at the Havana Social Club brings together a couple of bands introducing a new spin to point’s of view that feel steeped in history. This month they’ve managed to artfully match local band See Me River to another band that makes actually sense. This is no easy task as the Kerry Zettel fronted band one of Seattle’s most noticeable and distinct Americana bands. Distinct because they aren’t trying to sound like anyone else. Noticeable because Zettel sings with an unmistakable vocal personality that makes the songs alive.

The rising act given the opportunity to build on their own name with the honor of traveling with this month’s RUMBLE is L.A.’s Rumspringa, a band rooted in the blues and very interested in building songs with a thick tone palette. Comparison’s to the efforts of the Black Keys aren’t off base, but this also doesn’t convey the range of what they’re attempting to offer. The two songs below are a nice way to start getting a sense of what mean, a modern one featuring a very SoCal musical breakdown, and another one that very effectively blurs the line between rock and blues but could be easily labeled either:

If you like what you hear, show up around 9pm on Capitol Hill for the Trumer Pils specials and some dense, organic, West Coast music.

The RUMBLE goes My Goodness

Web

Next Monday the RUMBLE wants you to know about our new favorite purveyors of no rules local RAWK, My Goodness. When people from around the world imagine the Seattle Sound, they imagine the wild west of rock n’ roll, a shifty and dangerous place from which emanates unhinged, unadulterated ‘music.’ My Goodness only reinforces this notion. Double-speed dirty Blues roaring through three stacks of amps? Where’ve you been all my life?!

This month’s RUMBLE is happening July 5th at the Havana in Seattle. Arizona’s What Laura Says landed the traveling spot on this edition of the RUMBLE tour and is also on the bill.

The RUMBLE is Monday with Motopony

june-seattle-1

Local band Motopony are a fairly new group headed by one Daniel Blue, in November releasing their debut self-titled LP under the radar. Almost a year later they’re in the midst of a campaign to create a fan supported limited edition vinyl EP titled Wait for Me.

This Monday the quirky indie rock quartet comes to the Havana via June’s RUMBLE, where they’ll be paired with the event’s travelling act Chasing Kings. The poster above is I believe an allusion to one of the songs I’ve featured for you below, taken from their debut LP, which you can listen to in it’s entirety on Soundcloud:

King Of Diamonds by Motopony

After a listen to the diversity of songs on the debut record, I’m very interested to see what these gentlemen have to offer live. It’s another promising Monday night of new bands at the Havana brought to us by the RUMBLE.

October’s RUMBLE starts in Sea-town

oct-5-small

The RUMBLE is a series of  monthly reoccurring  shows that have been happening around the West in major cities for a few months. Now the idea and Rumble have grown and seems to be centered on a full on multi-city tour at decent size venues for one lucky band, with handpicked supporting bands in each place they visit. U.S.E was in on it in September and they did the RUMBLE in 4 coastal cities. October brings the RUMBLE to Seattle’s Crocodile as a starting point that afterward it will take white boy soul group Fitz & the Tantrums to five more cities (for a total of six).

Our date has the special addition of Wild Orchid Children headlining:

OCTOBER 5 @ THE CROCODILE
21+, doors at 8pm & FREEEEEEE
WILD ORCHID CHILDREN
FITZ & THE TANTRUMS
THE SATELLITE 4
with DJs Valentine & Carly (of U.S.E)
You read that right - $FREE!!!!

In the future the RUMBLE is promised to be happening at the Crocodile on the first Monday of every month and traveling to even more cities. Any tour where it’s free, filled with thoughtful local lineups, and every show gets a poster as cool as this, I can get behind. See the RUMBLE’s well kept myspace for all the show dates and posters.

Seattle’s The Blakes who’ve just left on tour will be taking part in the the October 8th and 10th shows in Los Angeles and San Diego respectively.
