Local News of Import

Protest of the Confused. Apparently there was a protest setup in front of Studio Seven under the guise of Studio Seven requiring bands to “pay to play” that didn’t turn out to be a protest against Studio Seven at all. Instead a band was disgruntled at the promoter that they weren’t able to play because they didn’t sell enough tickets (100 at $15 a pop). Read down to the comments for a report on the events and the real reasons for the protest.

Yesterday the Seattle City Council passed the initial set of new rules regarding nightlife regulation. It doesn’t include the controversial provision requiring a license to run a club, a rule that will go to a vote in September. The rules that were passed though include hiring people to actually enforce existing nightlife rules and the requirement for businesses to write safety plans for review by the City.

Showboxes? While I don’t know that venue consolidation is as bad a thing the Stranger makes it out to be, it is an interesting trend as of late. The Fenix (formerly the Premier) is now the Showbox SODO. This 1500 person venue is a monster, with the bar at the back of the warehouse size room, a good 50 yards from the stage. They say their going to remodel it. Hopefully more bar next to the stage.

New Postal Service album out December 25. I read it in Spin. Aw snap.

…but I’ve Always Wanted to Act…

First a major label and now Ben Gibbard is going all Hollywood on us?

From Pitchfork: “(Gibbard) has a role in the big-screen adaptation of David Foster Wallace’s short story collection Brief Interviews With Hideous Men, directed by John Krasinski, aka Jim from the American version of The Office.”" Apparently, according to my imdb.com ‘research,’ he’s playing a character named Harry and will be surrounded by fellow thespians like “some guy from Snakes on a Plane.”

Oh Pitchfork- you’re on fire today! Postal Service Cheats on USPS- with UPS! SOTS got in a big discussion this weekend when we spied the UPS commercial feturing none other than Ben Gibbard’s The Postal Service. We thought we remembered something about the deal they struck with the USPS during that whole cease-and-desist debacle… something about cross marketing rights. Now, you’re being used by their chief competitior?!? Do you have something against the US Postal Service? Do you have no shame sirs?! We wonder if the Post Master General is going to do some regulating on our most-missed-indie-side-project? Because, we might pay to see something like that.

Ben’s Going Postal

Noise For Toaster shows us Ben Folds doing a Postal Service cover of “Such Great Heights.” A video and mp3.

To Die By Your Side has a live radio performance of the Postal Service with Jenny Lewis included. Very nice.

Here is a Postal Service nugget just for SOTS readers. This is Ben Gibbard doing a solo version of “The Dream of Evan and Chan.”
