This Weekend in Holiday Shows (As Written by Bennington, The Pretentious Music Critic Elf)

by

Merry Moondoggies ::: photo by Abbey Simmons

I get tired of writing about the same bands all the time. Just as I’m sure you get tired of reading me write about the same bands over and over again. So what do you think I did for this holiday season? I wrote a letter to the North Pole offering Santa free MP3′s and political kickbacks for extravagant presents and asked Santa if he had a resident music expert elf (preferably one that used to write for Pitchfork) that would like to contribute to our website. In response I got an autographed photo of New York Yankees great Derek Jeter (I would have preferred a lump of coal) and the services of Bennington, the pretentious music critic elf. Enjoy.

Dear Sound on the Sound Readers,

I have been asked by your Christian demi-god of retail and a hack-riffic blogger to give you previews for all the holiday related shows happening in Seattle over the course of the next few days. I’m an Elf. If there’s one thing I know besides pouring maple syrup over everything (where do you think gigantic elf Will Ferrell got that hilarious act from?), it’s what people living in first world countries should do with their time during the holidays. Why do we give special consideration to those living in industrialized nations? Because Santa and Co. have a sweet deal with the IMF and the World Bank. Third World Countries can go kick rocks.

Three Imaginary Girls Holiday Party on Friday @ CCT

Did you know that there’s more than three girls (and boys) working for “Three Imaginary Girls”? They’ll never let their identity be known because they’re superheroes. I’m afraid you’ll have to venture to their holiday party at the Columbia City Theater to find out exactly what’s going on. TIG, has a procured a pop friendly lineup consisting of Eef Barzelay (of Clem Snide), Mal de Mer (who have a song with the same name as the greatest Nintendo game ever) and The Heligoats. Don’t be afraid to make your presence known on the south side of town. “Pop” is no longer a dirty word (it took some time but it finally forgave U2).

Worlds Collide at the Black Lodge on Friday Night

What happens when you take a fiercely catchy band, with a horrible band name (Livingston Seagull) and put them on the same bill with an awesome band, with an awesome band name (White Coward)?!? Then you add two other bands (Sloths, Heavy Flow) that have websites but you don’t have the frickin’ time to check them out because Prancer and Blitzen have decided to go on strike (and run off to Cabo, the audacity!). and Santa is being a complete hard-ass about the entire affair. You may think his anger is reindeer union related, but I’m telling you it has everything to do with the fact that Mrs. Claus is currently infatuated with the Black Lodge. It’s unhealthy I tell you.

The Cops Ruin Christmas (Again) Friday Night at The Tractor

Cops can ruin any joyous situation in a hurry. However, this “on-again off-again, wait, are they on again” Seattle quartet are probably the only group of law enforcement that you should be happy to see on a Friday night. I don’t usually see The Cops when they play during other times of the year but their December shows are always a good time. Plus, they are playing with the always entertaining Hopscotch Boys. In other words, shit is going to get weird quickly. I expect to see exotic animals that have been mounted and stuffed, lots of awful looking Christmas sweaters, people smoking cigarettes outside the venue, bartenders pouring stiff drinks, Lady Gaga doing a duet with Jawz (not Mike from the Cops, the actual James Bond villain) and much, much more. Besides, it’s Ballard, the happiest place on Earth. Haters are gonna hate….

Hopscotch Boys Reunion ::: photo by Josh Lovseth

My greatest accomplishment of 2011 may go down as organizing a show that inspired the Hopscotch Boys to reunite. After scenes like this from their first show in three years, it really couldn’t just be a one night thing.

Hopscotch Boys are playing this Friday’s 4th annual “The Cops Ruin Christmas (Again)” at The Tractor with The Golden Blondes, Lovesick Empire and, of course, The Cops. Tickets are $10 and its sure to sell-out, so get them now.

Recommendations: City Arts Fest on Thursday

by

294110_2468196952597_1482536475_32685247_670513429_n

The second annual City Arts Fest gets the weekend started early this Thursday with something for just about everybody: punk rock at the Comet, a soulful sold out show at The Triple Door, some of Seattle’s finest songwriters at the Showbox, a dance party at The Paramount and more.

We’ll be sharing our daily City Arts recommendations with you for the rest of the week. First, Thursday.

Long Winters, Campfire OK, Cobirds Unite, Cataldo at The Showbox:

Even if this weren’t The Long Winters only show in 2011 (it is), this show would still come with the highest recommendation. Not only is it a four-band bill of headliners, its also a showcase of some of Seattle’s most skilled wordsmiths. There’s a reason folks have been patiently anticipating The Long Winters next album for five years. John Roderick’s wit, wisdom and penchant for penning pop songs that burrow in your head and heart are worth waiting for. I’m particularly pleased with the pairing of Cataldo with The Long Winters, as Eric Anderson’s songs have filled my need for smart melodic melancholy in between spins of Roderick’s contemporary classics like “Shapes,” “Carparts,” and “Cinnamon.” Campfire OK, who is better every time I see them, and the power duo of Rachel Flotard and Rusty Willoughby as Cobirds Unite, only sweetens the bill. (Abbey)

Strong Killings ::: photo by Josh Lovseth

The Cops, Birthday Suits, Nazca Lines, Strong Killings at The Comet:

Yeah, I know the Cops are “headlining” and everyone in Seattle everyone who pays utility bills can rally around the idea of Free Electricity. However, I’m here to give you the lowdown on what’s really shaking cool cat. Can you dig it? Don’t tell your friends, this is on the q-t, very hush hush Grab your muskets and prepare for a midnight ride to the center of the blogosphere. By the time we’re through, your fingers will be covered in gunpowder and blood (by hyper-tweeting and Facebook “liking,” of course). Onward young soldier, brace yourself what is about to come.

Strong Killings! Scream it from pit of your burning stomach. Possible “Album of the Year”?! Possible “Song of the Year”?!? Did I already mention this band is a “Live Performance of the Year” nominee? These are not requirements to perform on any stage of Seattle, let alone this cool festival. Yet Strong Killings have earned these purple hearts with years of practice and a blue-collar work ethic by eating the flesh of lesser bands and growing stronger from their unimpeeded cannibalism. ARGH. This is the best band that you don’t listen too, what the fuck. I can’t wait until your grubby hands are Tivo’ing their performance on Saturday Night Live while I’m homeless in an alley in some unnamed city, sucking dick for heroin but still managing to yell from the side of my mouth, “This blogger told you fuckers! Strong Killings!” Birthday Suits didn’t get here by cannibalism. No folks they got here by living in a van down by the river and living in a van and then living in a van again. Every time I wake up and walk down to the corner to grab a cup of coffee, this band is back in Seattle on-tour. I commend them, whatever vehicle they use to circumvent the earth and whatever is missing them back in Minneapolis. Who said that a two-piece can’t do what four-piece rock outfits can? Psshhhh. Now is not the time for Local H jokes, we’re in a war-zone soldier. If you like the Cops, the Blind Shake or any guitar driven rock with a danceable groove, this is your band.

Show starts at 9pm. (Phil)

Allen Stone ::: photo by Josh Lovseth

Allen Stone with Fly Moon Royalty at The Triple Door:

Single tickets for this fun & funky night at The Triple Door have already soul’d out, so you’ll have to have a wristband to attend. Considering The Triple Door may be the smallest room you see Allen Stone perform in for years to come (and the rest of the Fest line-up), we urge you to do so.

“Allen Stone cultivates a thick-rimmed suave, his toothy grin comes easy and he’s very interested in making sure everyone is getting “funked up.” His overwhelming enthusiasm is just that, overwhelming, and since it’s all in service of having a good time, it consumes the room in the best way possible.”

Other Excellent Thursday Night Options:

The Cops Clock In For One Final Shift

by

The Cops ::: Photos by Josh

The Cops have been a Seattle institution for the last five years, and just before the bands ultimate set at their home stage at Sunset Tavern last Saturday, the bar was absolutely buzzing with anticipation for what one prominent local music writer posited would be “a show that legends are made of.” Having seen the band numerous times over the past three years and at two SXSW running, I can attest that this night is probably the best I’ve heard the band sound.

Opener’s Wallpaper are fast becoming one of my favorite local three-pieces, delivering consistently fun and upbeat danceable retro-rock that never fails to put a smile on my face and a tap in my foot. I gotta say I effing love “This is a Chase.” Second opener The Sea Navy encountered one of the toughest crowds I’ve seen yet in Seattle: a full bar, barely paying attention and barely clapping between songs. Playing the full selection of cuts from their soon to be released album with a couple of topical crowd-pleasers thrown in, the band was trying hard, playing good and getting nowhere. It wasn’t really their moment or night though. Everyone was waiting on the Cops.

Taking the stage a shade past midnight the Cops wasted no time in beginning. Everyone was all smiles, banter was going back and forth between the stage and the front rows, and then ROCK. The Cops are a band that moves, jumps, and interacts with each other, feeding off of the energy of crowd, and since tonight was all friends, all of that was taken up a notch or five. That a band who’s sounding this good and has this much support was deciding to call it day is indeed a disappointing and notable moment for our scene. The points Seattle has just lost on it’s fun and quality-rock quotients will be dearly missed.

The Daily Choice: The Fucking Ocean – Adam

by

Due to an excess of work and absence of sleep over the last week I’ve literally been slogging through a sort of tired, zombie-like haze.  Things are getting done far less than usual (and that’s saying a lot) and my small pile of responsibilities are falling to the wayside.

Without the likes of songs like “Adam” from San Francisco-based group The Fucking Ocean, I’m pretty sure I’d have been targeted, and rolled for my scant earnings.  Luckily for me this song is a short burst of adrenaline fueled post-punk that runs the gamut from almost Foals-like angular riffs to more traditional punk rock that gets my fists pumping like only The Cops can usually manage.

However you want to describe the fast-paced noisy mess that is “Adam” I can promise you this, if you’re tired and looking for a little sonic energy, this song will do the trick.

Free Ballard!

by

the lonely h
The Lonely H

While Stephen Merritt might never want to go to a place called Ballard, I think the neighborhood is just fine and very worthy of it’s own SXSW day party in Austin. Last year’s party was great, and lucky us, the details for this year’s party have finally emerged:

Mt. Fuji Records/Control Group/Lost Barrio Artists/Seattle Weekly and Audio Socket present Free Ballard SXSW Day Party

Thursday 03/13 @ Longbranch Inn 1133 E. 11th

The Hands (6pm), The Beltholes (5:15pm), Lonely H (4:30pm), Mostly Bears (3:45pm), The Cops (3pm), Eddie Spaghetti (solo, of The Supersuckers, 2:25pm), Mannequin Men (1:30pm), Feral Children (1:30pm), Thee Sgt Major III (noon)

While I must endorse you attending our party, which is happening at the same time across town (see the top of the sidebar for more details), I would be remiss in not at least talking about another Seattle related party happening down there which people might be interested in. A few of our favorite local acts including the Lonely H, the Hands, and Feral Children will all be admirably holdin’ it down for the Northwest.

You might be thinking “Free Ballard?” Free Ballard from what? The answer to that question is the infernal clutches of Seattle of course.
