sleepy eyes of death - data grave from Patrick Richardson Wright on Vimeo.
To call Sleepy Eyes of Death’s “Data Grave” a video, seems to me almost an insult or belittlement. This isn’t a video, it is a mini-movie, during which you’re bound to be just as intrigued by the images and story unfolding as the soundtrack behind it.
Congrats to our friends (and inspirations) local photographers turned video producers Patrick Richardson Wright and Kyle Johnson and to Sleepy Eyes of Death on the new video. We look forward to seeing more from both the movie makers and the song writers.

Attempting to talk about Sleepy Eyes of Death is akin to “dancing about architecture,” a fruitless effort of useless comparisons and not-good-enough adjectives. Trying to box them into “post-rock” is lazy and incomplete. Technology can accomplish more now than ever before and the guitar is no longer the end all be all. In 2010 a synth isn’t just a hopped up piano, it’s a digital controller with tons of flexibility, something that most people barely realize.
Go up front, inhale a full breath of the smoke machine, stand right in front of the thundering bass drum, and watch guitarist Cassidy shred among the blinking lights in what appears to be a furious stop-motion. Then, I think, you might start to get an idea of what Sleepy Eyes of Death are all about.

This week Seattle’s Sleepy Eyes of Death spilled the beans on their plans for coming back into the performing fold after taking a short break to record and recharge. Today they posted a song from a forthcoming record on their myspace, a record that they’ll separate the release of on Friday April 30th at Neumos in Seattle, with Feral Children and Talkdemonic. “Data Grave” is the name of the new track, and it’s the lead track from Toward a Damaged Horizon which will be officially released Tuesday, May 4th.
You can get tickets early to the record release show via Neumos new web ticket vendor eTix.com.

The Beats, Man ::: Photos by Abbey
Last Saturday’s Audioasis benefit was a good time, in large part due to the efforts of opening band The Beats, Man, the newly-active laptop-based project of former Pleasureboaters Erik Baldwin and Tim Cady. Energetic, goofy, and engaging are all words I’d use to reference the performance of their funky blend of electronics, hip-hop punk and the occasional slow jam. I can’t find an mp3 of them hanging around anywhere, so you’ll just have to head on over to myspace to listen to “Freedomtown” and “Beats Mand of Horses,” and then choose from the bevy of dates they have listed that are happening in Seattle over the next month. Unless you’ve got something against loosening up and having a little fun that is.

The Stranger has gathered together a group of up-and-coming Seattle bands for a showcase called “The Young Ones.” Taking over Neumos, and a venue across the street called Sole Repair (a former shoe shop turned bar), what the Stranger thinks are some of the best new bands in town will be playing. It’s a benefit for Real Change as well, so you have double the reason to go.
