The Doe Bay Sessions: Sallie Ford & the Sound Outside

by

Sallie Ford and the Sound Outside

Oregonians Adam and Eve and their son Donovan were just finishing packing up their campsite on Saturday afternoon as we rolled up and set up shop mid-trail. They’d spent the previous weekend in the woods for Pickathon and after a second weekend in a row among nature were now ready to find their own bed again. There was time for one more performance though, since it was Sallie Ford they’d come to see after all. Or that Donavan had come to see rather. That we’d chosen just that spot at just that time was Doe Bay magic in full effect for that little boy. The week prior Ford and Co. had been on Letterman in front of millions, but now they were happily stomping their feet in the dirt on a trail in front of one lucky superfan.

Jaunty strums and catchy chorus’ counteract the often dark themes in Ford’s lyrics and the two songs played in this session are no exception. Ford and band make bad situations danceable and takes the sting out with call-and-response harmonies and a rhythm to move to. From the opening moments of “Cage,” the second song in this Doe Bay Session, the “doo-doo-doo” harmonies and the bouncing shoulders we get the sense that the best way to deal with the devil is to have your fun in spite of him.

Friday November 18th Sallie Ford kicks off a round of East Coast and European dates with a send off show at the Wonder Ballroom in Portland, where they’ll be joined by Seattle’s Pickwick.

Three Unmissable Local Sets, For All Three Days of Bumbershoot

by

Bumbershoot Crowd ::: photo by Josh Lovseth

When I was working on my “Five Things You Can’t Miss at Bumbershoot” posts, I noticed something strange. Save Red Fang, not a single band I recommend was local to the Pacific Northwest. And that’s not because there aren’t some great local bands playing this years Bumbershoot, there are scads of them. The Fest did a solid job booking Seattle and Portland bands I want to see from hip hop to heavy, from beats to banjos. But, for the most part they’re all bands I’ve seen before and all bands you can see again as soon as the Bumbershoot blackout dates pass. Which means while I’m not anticipating them quite as much as my Top 5 acts, you better believe I’ll be there in the front row for lots of local acts. Here’s three Pacific Northwest bands for all three days of the festival, you shouldn’t miss.

Doe Bay Fest ::: photo by Josh Lovseth

In a week full of festival line-ups, there’s no denying Doe Bay Fest’s was the one we were most looking forward to learning.

Alongside many of the expected cast of characters, like four-year festival veterans The Maldives, this year’s Doe Bay line-up has expanded beyond its usual radius of Seattle and Portland to include San Francisco’s John Vanderslice, LA’s Frank Fairfield and Oklahoma’s OK Sweetheart. As in past years, Doe Bay Fest has tapped some of the Pacific Northwest’s finest established performers and buzzed about up-and-comers like Damien Jurado, The Head and The Heart, Sallie Ford & the Sound Outside, Sera Cahoone, the Builders & the Butchers, Pickwick, Kelli Schaefer, Lemolo and Bryan John Appleby. I’m especially excited to see more local hip hop on this year’s line-up: Champagne Champagne, Mash Hall/Don’t Talk to the Cops and Fly Moon Royalty are sure to bring the party to Orcas Island.

Here’s who will be playing the fourth annual Doe Bay Fest:

The Head and The Heart, Damien Jurado, John Vanderslice, Sallie Ford & the Sound Outside, The Builders and the Butchers, Sera Cahoone, Pickwick, The Maldives, Champagne Champagne, Kelli Schaefer, Ravenna Woods, Lemolo, Cobirds Unite, Campfire OK, Frank Fairfield, Bryan John Appleby, Tea Cozies, Shelby Earl, Mash Hall / Don’t Talk to the Cops, Fly Moon Royalty, OK Sweetheart, Goldfinch, Matt & Mike Gervais (Curtains for You), Matt Bishop (Hey Marseilles), Youth Rescue Mission, Elk & Boar, Melodie Knight, Hannalee, Sean Flinn

Sallie Ford & The Sound Outside – “I Swear” [video]

by

Sallie Ford & the Sound Outside – I Swear from Matthew Ross on Vimeo.

Considering “of another era” is probably the most common phrase used to describe Sallie Ford & The Sound Outside’s style, their decade-spanning video for “I Swear” suits them to a tee.

Sallie’s highly-anticipated debut album Dirty Radio was released yesterday and she’ll be celebrating its release Thursday June 2nd at The Tractor Tavern and back-to-back nights Friday and Saturday at the Doug Fir in Portland.
