Here’s what I know about Ruler, its not much:

Alphabetically the first bandcamp tags to describe the project reads “dignified, dramatic, folk” which I like right off the bat.

Ruler is a brand new band from Matt Batey of Cataldo.

They’ll be playing their first show on January 29th at The Sunset with Portland’s Lost Lander.

I have listened to “Keep Moving” thirteen times today.

“Keep Moving” is indeed dignified and dramatic but sounds nothing like most things labeled as “folk.” Driven more by drums than harmonies or guitar and with a bitter crescendo that hits both hard and sweetly, this tune is radio and break-up mix ready.

With just one track Ruler has moved to the top of my list of local bands I’m curious to hear more from, so I’ll see you at the Sunset January 29th.
