Courtesy of Pearl Jam’s official YouTube account we get the equation for what’s sure to be an internet sensation: One of the biggest bands in America + incredibly rabid fan base + one of the biggest memes ever = “Never Give You Up” by Stone Gossard.

Pearl Jam at Key Arena

eddie-vedder2-by-karen-loria

Photo by Karen Loria for Pearl Jam

[Editors Note: Fellow local blogger Travis Hay of Ear Candy offered to write up Pearl Jam's return to Seattle's Key Arena, and we took him up on that offer. He knows his stuff, so it was an offer we couldn't refuse. -josh]

By Travis Hay

It was a tale of two concerts at KeyArena Monday and Tuesday nights when Pearl Jam launched its umpteenth U.S. tour with two completely different sets displaying the emotion, power and range of the local rock icons. But I’ll get to that soon enough; first I need to make a confession.

In full disclosure I must admit that as a music fan and writer I tend to play my fandom close to the vest, but when it comes to Pearl Jam I proudly wear it on my sleeve. Yes, I know it is cliché for a music writer in Seattle to be a huge Pearl Jam fan, but it’s equally cliché in this current Pitchfork climate for pretentious indie snobs in Seattle to pay no attention to one of this city’s biggest musical exports since Heart. So I proudly own and announce my Pearl Jam fandom.

Now that my confessional is out of the way, let’s talk about the music. I’ll start by telling those of you who went to Monday’s show and didn’t pony up the cash for Tuesday’s concert that you really missed out. While I understand why you didn’t go to both nights since tickets were about $85 after service charges and tax, you should know Tuesday marked one of Pearl Jam’s best concerts in Seattle since their 1998 Memorial Stadium gigs. The contrast of the two nights felt similar to the band’s 2002 two-night stint at KeyArena where the first show was good but the second show was amazing. Tuesday the band played a set filled with deep cuts and rarities delivered with more emotion and passion than I’ve seen out of Pearl Jam in years. For a full rundown of what happened Monday read my review here.

With his typical safety blanket of composition books and bottles of wine by his side, Eddie Vedder was more playful and animated compared to the previous night. “Sometimes” from 1996’s No Code started the near-flawless set slowly but the momentum picked up with “Why Go,” “Insignificance,” “Comatose,” “Lukin” and others.

Another disclosure for the record: I don’t sing in public. In fact, the only time I sing Pearl Jam is when I’m at home alone in the shower. Tuesday KeyArena was my shower and I was bathing in a sea of some of my favorite PJ tunes (“Spin The Black Circle,” “Dissident” and “In My Tree” to name a few). Actually, I ended up becoming the guy I hate at concerts. You know him (or her) as the person who sings along loudly to every song and ruins it for you while you’re trying to listen to the vocalist on stage. In fact as I write this my voice is a little hoarse from all the singing but man was it worth it.
One of the reasons for my hoarseness is due to “No Way” from Yield a song the band rarely performs. It was only the fourth time in the band’s career “No Way” made an appearance in a set list, much to the delight of the hardcore Pearl Jam fans in attendance.

The set also included seven Backspacer tunes and although it’s a new song Vedder changed the words to “Supersonic,” turning it into a commentary about the departure of the Supersonics. The new version included the lyrics “I bought a ticket but the game was gone” and it was the most spirited song of the set. You’ll have to buy the bootleg to hear it because Eddie called it a one-time-only deal.

The only song that appeared on both nights that can’t be found on Backspacer was “Do The Evolution.” A cover of The Who’s “The Real Me” with the Syncopated Taint Horn Quartet also showed up both nights and the horns really brightened up the Pearl Jam sound. In theory Pearl Jam with horns sounds like a terrible idea but in practice it was an excellent departure. The band kept its rock edge (it’s a Who song, of course it’s going to rock) while adding a flashy element to its style.

The show’s only hiccup came when the up-tempo “Got Some” followed “Present Tense” which was an odd transition but it was rectified when the band busted out “Go” to end the main set.

The first encore started with Backspacer’s “Just Breathe” and “The End,” which is one of the most beautiful song Vedder has written since “Black.” After that touching combo, Vedder teased the crowd by suggesting something hard and heavy was on its way.

“I guess we should play something more upbeat,” he said. “Well too bad. I want you to feel pain.”

So what’s he go and do? He launches into “Black.”

Thanks Eddie, I really wanted to cry at a rock show.

Seriously though, it was a pretty impactful moment. Even though I was sitting in the deep recesses of KeyArena behind the soundboard, the emotional heft of the song combined with 17,000 people singing along made it feel like an intimate performance and not a big arena rock show. It’s moments like that when the power of Pearl Jam shines. It was also during that moment when the show went from being one of the band’s better efforts at KeyArena to its best. The set list combined with the band’s passion and emotion are what made the second show easily surpass Monday’s tour kickoff.

In summary Monday was a mixed bag of hits combined with new material. All the usual suspects showed up including the dramatic “Daughter,” the crowd singalong “Better Man” and a pretty mediocre “Even Flow.” The big surprise of that night was the Octava String Quartet sitting in for two songs (they came back for Tuesday’s show). It was a pretty even set but nothing too spectacular. It’s also worth noting that Monday didn’t end with “Yellow Ledbetter.” Actually it ended with the house lights turned on for an uplifting “Alive.”

In contrast Tuesday’s show, which was Pearl Jam’s 50th concert in Seattle (“Not as many as Mudhoney,” Vedder said.), ended like so many before it with the Hendrix homage “Yellow Ledbetter.” YLB transitioned into Mike McCready hammering out a spectacular “Star Spangled Banner” like it usually does. I’m typically not a hugely patriotic person, but McCready’s rendition of the National Anthem always gets to me so I took off my Pearl Jam hat, held it over my heart and stared at the flag simultaneously saluting both America and one of this country’s best bands, Pearl Jam. It felt like the perfect way to end two great nights at KeyArena.

Win BACKSPACER on Vinyl

pearljam-backspacer-web-450x450

This week’s release of Pearl Jam’s new record BACKSPACER on their own label XX, as well as a hometown return for two nights at Key Arena, marks for them a step back into the limelight. As well as an opportunity for Pearl Jam to showcase a record made for themselves and their fans, unencumbered by the weight of a contract or any other extraneous expectations. With that luxury of time and resources, Pearl Jam did what everyone wanted them to do: deliver a group of songs definitively the Pearl Jam of today.

Eddie Vedder’s voice is sounding as good as ever in my opinion, and by stacking three driving songs in a row to begin, “Gonna See My Friend,” “Got Some,” and “The Fixer,” they’ve ensured a memorable start to the record. “Supersonic” and “Johnny Guitar” round out the count on the classic fist pumpers to five and with just that Pearl Jam fans have something to be pleased with. That’s pretty much it for the loud and fast numbers though, the only vestiges of a band that originally made it’s name as a dark brooding bunch of outsiders from nowheresville. On the whole in BACKSPACER, little sign is left of the grit and angst that would musically link them to Seattle’s most famous musical era (though “Gonna See My Friend” sounds feels very Mudhoney until that weird high vocal moment in bridge). Making up the other half of the album are a couple of power ballads as well as some unexpectedly quiet numbers.

Though I have to admit that the production on the record is top-notch, for much of the record I’m reminded of the big glossy arena and video rock of the eighties instead of the edgy band with a chaotic energy that dominated the charts in the 90’s, or even the band that reasserted themselves with a song like “World Wide Suicide” a few short years ago. In the slow burner “Force of Nature” I have to resist the urge to find a punching bag like I’m in the midst of an eighties karate movie training sequence. (This isn’t necessarily a bad thing. I can appreciate Journey.) And tell me “Unthought Known” doesn’t immediately remind you of U2, past or present. Actually, with this many years behind them, their stadium nature and the freedom to be essentially autonomous, Pearl Jam reminds me quite a lot of U2 in many ways. Ultimately they are a stadium band now, and while with BACKSPACER they haven’t done anything drastically out of left field, they have put together a sturdy collection of stadium ready songs that are probably best played at full volume.

Thanks to the band, one lucky reader who throws their name in the hat in the comments by Thursday September 24 at 12-noon will be randomly chosen to receive a Vinyl edition of BACKSPACER. If your comment doesn’t appear right away, we’ll make sure it’s approved in time for the drawing.

Those who don’t win can obtain a vinyl copy of BACKSPACER directly from the band or hit up a local independent record store. It is also digitally available on iTunes as well. Target is the only major retailer with exclusive rights to sell the record, so I suppose it can be had there too.

Tickets are also still apparently available for Tuesdays show. Provided you are willing to shell out $66 and then some to Ticketmaster.

Pearl Jam Played Conan’s new show, apparently warmed up with a secret set at the Showbox

Yesterday all the rags were abuzz with news of a staged Showbox set by Pearl Jam that apparently happened last Thursday. The word is extra’s were enlisted as crowd members, Cameron Crowe was filming, and the footage may appear in a documentary and a Target commercial, as it may be the preferred retailer for the band’s new album. Notably a new song supposedly titled “The Fixer” was featured from the band’s yet to be released album, an album that now officially has a name: Backspacer.

I say now officially because last night the band played another new song, possibly titled “Shift,” titled “Got Some” on the night of official passing of the Tonight Show torch to Conan O’Brien, and he mentioned the name and displayed an album cover as he introduced the band.

The new song? Very Pearl Jammy. Was the sound intentionally muddy so as to foil pirates? I can only hope. You be the judge.

The Week In Jeff Ament News

Jeff Ament (right) playing with Green River at last year’s SP20 festival ::: Photo by Josh

Today Rolling Stone reports Pearl Jam bassist Jeff Ament was attacked by three masked men, mugged and robbed outside of the Atlanta studio where Pearl Jam is doing work on their next album. Thousands in cash and goods were taken.

It looks like Ament won’t be hanging out in Atlanta too long as his old band from Montana Deranged Diction is reuniting this weekend for two special shows, one happening May 15th at the new Crocodile (see poster below). Then the following week I guessing Ament will be reprising his role as a member of Green River at the Showbox at the Market for two shows in a row supporting the Melvins.

No word yet on any Seattle dates for Ament’s current band, however one blogger seems to think that a Bumbershoot appearance by the band could still be in the works. A commenter to that post, apparently from the Bumbershoot staff, says they are 100% positive the band is not playing though. Too bad for us I guess.

Pearl Jam’s gonna have a video game

Come next year, like the Beatles and AC/DC, Pearl Jam will have their own edition of Rock Band, but apparently theirs will be the first edition of the game where fans will have made the choices about what songs appear. Well, sort of. The songs with the most plays on the Rhapsody streaming music service will be the ones considered for placement in the game, so votes are measured by actual actions. Then in June people will be asked to create playlists of their favorite songs from the remaining choices to help narrow it down even further.

This will no doubt be an interesting experiment in fanbase mobilization considering the scope of the ten club and general rabidness of Pearl Jam fans.
