Even More Reasons to Road Trip to Boise for Treefort Fest

We thought Treefort’s initial line-up announcement gave enough compelling reasons to make the road trip to Boise. But the upstart music fest has made four more line-up announcements since then giving us even more reasons to be planning a visit to Idaho. In addition to Pickwick, Lemolo, Built to Spill, Of Monteral and WHY? the following folks have been added to the line-up:

We’re Making Noise for the Needy this Saturday

For five days this week Seattle’s Noise for the Needy festival brings to stages across the city a veritable flurry of local and extra-local talent, all in support of Real Change. Our sponsored bill goes off this weekend with Portland’s Loch Lomond at the helm making their first visit to Columbia City Theater, supported by Big Sur, Goldfinch and The Horde & The Harem.

Early on in 2011 Loch Lomond snuck their new record Little Me Will Start A Storm in under our noses, passing us by until Haley Young’s video for “Elephants and Little Girls” (below) got our attention. The concept is cute, a one-shot marvel of visual trickery that by the end even makes fun of itself a bit, turning out playful in it’s final touches and resolution. Such a production is every bit as intricate as Loch Lomond’s own efforts for just about everything they do. Little Me Will Start A Storm employs a true choir of voices in ways most pop music doesn’t venture, and manages instrumentation more delicate still than fellow Northwest baroque pop powerhouses Grand Hallway and Campfire OK construct.

 

 

With four bands on the bill at the Columbia City Theater, the music will be starting a bit earlier than usual, probably around 9. Entrance is $12. Snag tickets in advance online.

Great Bands, Great Cause: Noise for the Needy Line-Up Announced, We Help Present a Show!

Every year, Noise for the Needy is one of our favorite local events. A great local festival, for a great cause, this year’s Noise for the Needy will benefit Real Change Empowerment Project, the folks behind Real Change newspaper. Last year’s NFTN raised $25,000 for charity and this year’s fest with 80+ artists playing 21 shows will hopefully be just as successful. Tickets for most of the festival go on-sale Monday (May 2nd) at Noise for the Needy.

This year’s line-up is stacked with favorites: Hobosexual, Drew Grow and the Pastor’s Wives, Builders and the Butchers, Ravenna Woods, Youth Rescue Mission, Smokey Brights, Kelli Schaefer, Akimbo, Fly Moon Royalty and Land of Pines just to name a few. Sound on the Sound is also incredibly excited to be more than fans of the fest this year, as we’ll be presenting a showcase at Columbia City Theater on June 11th with Loch Lomond, Big Sur, Goldfinch, The Hoarde & The Harem and a DJ set from DJ Doo Right (who you know best as Seth from The Maldives).

Last year Sasquatch showed Seattle’s up and comer’s a whole lot of love, and this year Portland is the local city with the honor of the most performers. In fact it’s a veritable who’s who of notables coming out of PDX: Hockey, Blind Pilot, Loch Lomond, M Ward, The Decemberists, Viva Voce, Pt. Juncture, WA, The Builders and the Butchers, Blitzen Trapper, Horse Feathers. We can honestly say there’s not a bad one in the bunch and something for everyone, with a small gripe that maybe a little more female representation from the Rose city might’ve been nice (Laura Viers, Mirah, Explode into Colors… the list is lengthy).

To help you decide about which of these distinguished Oregonian bands you should see, I’ve assembled a nice list of free tracks from each of these bands (except one band who keeps a tight grip on their tracks online) for you to evaluate on the long drive to the Gorge. Enjoy and make sure to pick up these band’s albums should you like what you hear. A number of these bands including the Decemberists and Blind Pilot will be signing their albums at the Easy Street Booth throughout the festival, so take a look at that schedule too.

Make it Pop! PDX Pop Now Benefit Show

Portland’s community of musicians always seem to band together and put on the best benefit shows. This year’s benefit for PDX Pop Now! happening next week is no exception. Just before heading out on tour with the Shins, James Mercer will roll solo, along with a number of other local frontmen.

The Round goes to Austin

Mentioned before on Sound on the Sound, the Round is a gathering of musicians and artists (word, paint and otherwise) from different backgrounds to get on stage, collaborate, meditate, amuse and maybe play a few of each others songs for an evening in the space of Seattle’s Fremont Abbey. Just as an example of the typical pairings, the next edition happening April 14 gathers Jesy Fortino of Tiny Vipers, Grant Olsen of Arthur & Yu, John Van Deusen of about to break band the Lonely Forest, and poet Maya Hersh.

Last year it ventured outside Fremont and had its first Bumbershoot event. This year for SXSW The Round has an Austin edition for the first time and it features songwriters from the Northwest. From PDX are the much buzzed about Laura Gibson as well as Ritchie Young of Loch Lomond, while the Seattle contingent has Kate Tucker who’s in Austin debuting her new project honeydove, poet Ryler Dustin, and Matt Bishop of Hey Marseilles.
