The Daily Choice: The Mallard – Mansions

Following the release of their stellar Castle Face debut Yes On Blood, The Mallard’s little star has been rising, well, quickly to say the least. A tour with Thee Oh Sees, a recent show with The Fresh & Onlys, and an upcoming slate of live gigs a mile long – it’s nice to see this fantastic band finally get the credit they deserve. I’ve been waiting for months and months for something they’ve done, anything really, to get the video treatment, and now Grass Widow’s Hannah Lew (director of videos for Hunx and His Punx amongst many) has done the honor. Broken glass everywhere, that’s all I can say.

Check out The Mallard tomorrow night at The Independent with Ty Segall and White Fences.

The Daily Choice: Swiftumz – 4EVA

If I based my opinion on Swiftumz merely by the spelling of his name and the title of the first single of his that I’ve heard “4EVA”, I would’ve thought I was about to plug in to a dance-pop rapper aimed at 14 year old girls and their ilk.  Luckily, and per usual, I’m very wrong.  Swiftumz, a former song writer for Hunx and His Punx, transmute a similar energy found in the gay 80s punk rock of Hunx but swaps out some of the more doo-wop elements for the bouncy bassline of a more emotionally morose band like Joy Division (it angers me at all times that when I think of a certain era of music the only band I can think of, thus reference is Joy Division).  The lyrics tend to speak of “loving you 4EVA” and paired with the melancholic, though chipper, bass beat, it makes you a little bit sad and a bit like a pigtailed 14-year old girl at the same time.  Only in San Francisco huh?

Swiftumz’s Don’t Trip is out now on Holy Mountain.

The Daily Choice: Hunx and His Punx – Too Young To Be In Love

Another throwback cut from the new album from Hunx and His Punx.  Makes me want to hug somebody wrapped in barbed-wire.

The album of the same name drops on March 29th on Hardly Art.

The Daily Choice: Hunx and His Punx – Lovers Lane

The fine tastemakers over at Gorilla vs. Bear just premiered the first single off the new Hunx and His Punx album To Young To Be In Love.  ”Lover’s Lane” drips with an acid-edged puddle of broken-hearted longing.  Shannon Shaw, of the recently DCed Shannon and The Clams, adds a crackling hum as a member of Hunx’s enviable Punkettes.

The album, the first proper LP from the group, will be released on Hardly Art on March 29th.  Furthering the concept that March is the only month this year where any music is being released.
