Lost. And Found.

“Suicide Machine” - Elliott Smith

Courtesy of fellow local bloggers ECEU we’ve now get a listen to an Elliott Smith song that has just been unearthed, which he was supposedly working on during the time of his death, titled “Suicide Machine” . No I did not make the title of that song up, and no this is not a sick joke. Listen to it above.

It’s Winter - Cue the Weepy Strings

The temperature starts going below freezing, and out come the weepy string songs. This is of course, interspersed with the sparse acoustic tunes, which also dominate my winter listening.

Take a look at a few of my most played tunes as of late:

* the entire lovely album, Manressa Castle - The Solvents
here’s one of my favorite songs on the album, All Your Demons Pulling: All Your Demons Pulling - Solvents

* Majesty Snowbird - Sufjan Stevens

* Cold Wind - The Arcade Fire

* I Found A Reason - Cat Power I Found A Reason - Cat Power

* and a whole lot of Andrew Bird and Elliott Smith

Elliott Smith - Four Years Later

My parents generation remember exactly where they were when John F. Kennedy and John Lenon were shot.  I remember, like it was yesterday, exactly where I was when I heard that Elliott Smith was dead. It was October 21, 2003 - four years ago today - and I was at an internet cafe in Florence, Italy.

I was checking news headlines, to make sure the big one hadn’t hit Seattle while I was abroad, and was stunned to see Elliott Smith’s names in the top headlines. I knew I didn’t need to continue reading the headline, the talented musician would never get that kind of mainstream press if something horrible hadn’t happened. Still, I gasped when I read the complete headline, interupting the quiet of the cafe. For anyone that loved and listened to Elliott Smith, it was no great surprise that he perished too early or that it was at his own hands, but it doesn’t lessen the tragedy of his death. Had Elliott Smith been alive today, he would easily be the most important living Seattle/PNW musician and one of America’s greatest singer/songwriters.

To commemorate the day, Seattle has been fittingly grey and drizzly, not a single sun break throughout. As soon as the weather turns in this town, Elliott gets a lot more play at my house. With an early, damp, and miserable fall - he’s yet again returned to the top of my playlists. Here are a few of my favorite Elliott Smith songs for your enjoyment and reflection of what we all lost, October 21, 2003.

Today in Northwest Music News

  • Elliott Smith would have celebrated his 38th Birthday today. Had he lived, he would arguably be the most important artist hailing from the Pacific Northwest and one of the greatest living American singer/songwriters.

Here’s the first Elliott Smith song I fell in love with - Waltz #2 (XO)

  • The Blakes preview two new tunes from the forthcoming EP Streets. Check the bands Myspace to listen to “Magoo” and “Village Green.” While Magoo sounds like what you’d expect out of The Blakes, I’m a fan of the Beatles-esque Village Green. The bands first EP on their new label, Light in the Attic, will be out this month.
  • We’ve already told you how much we love them, but The Lonely H’s media lovefest continued today, where they were Spin.com’s band of the day!
