It All Comes Right … or How I Went on Tour for a Week and Stayed a Month

by

You see, I was only supposed to be here for a week, five shows to be exact, but somewhere around Louisville (show number three), I realized if I didn’t do everything I could to stay for the whole tour, I’d regret it for the rest of my life. I’d never been on tour before, (unless you count following Phish when I was 19, but that’s a whole other confession) and having already driven halfway across the country, seeing old friends, making new ones, and witnessing a couple local bands I love live out their dreams in a means that exceeded even their wildest — I was full-on hooked.

By the end of my adventure with Drew Grow and the Pastors’ Wives, we had driven 7,000 miles, through 30 states, played 22 shows, visited two countries and the van only broke down once. I watched proudly as the Pastors’ Wives played shows to 3,000 people and as they played shows to six, because the passion they put into the performances never waned. I watched in wonder as The Head and The Heart debuted new songs and played old songs in new ways, and as every city knew every word, even the ones they’d never been to before. I personally saw new places every day but two, and new faces every night, and was astounded to find they knew the songs and stories we know here in the Pacific Northwest. I spotted fans in collegiate Ohio wearing Bryan John Appleby t-shirts, shared a table at a tiny pizza joint in Portland, Maine with a Maldives fan, and met viewers of the Doe Bay Sessions in Athens, Georgia. There wasn’t a day I was there long after I was supposed to be back home in Seattle that I didn’t stand jaw-dropped and wish you all in the 206 could see what I was seeing.

Because I watched what’s happening here in your backyard (whether you like it or not) being embraced from coast-to-coast. I witnessed first hand, a band on the rise being gracious to their fans, great to their openers and so proud of the place they call home. They talked about Seattle like a smitten suitor, and when the bands announced they were from the Pacific Northwest, it was always one of the loudest cheers every night. Maybe there really is something in the water here; maybe we don’t realize how lucky we are to call this place home. Maybe we do and we forget it sometimes. Nothing has reminded me how lucky I am to have been born and raised, and to have settled as an adult in Seattle than to be away from it. Every night at the merch table when someone spotted my Washington State tattoo and wistfully said, “lucky…” I knew that I was in every fiber of my exhausted, elated being. I loved the road, but it is so very nice to be HOME.

Another Pastors’ Wives playlist and the addiction we picked up in Canada all in this installation of Postcards from the Road.

If you’d like to see some of my photos from tour, Drew Grow and the Pastors’ Wives kept a photo blog while we were travelling and I took many of them.

Fall for Tacoma’s Fall Free For All

by

fallfreeforallfinal

The time of solely spring and summer festivals is long gone, but with new festivals like Tacoma’s Fall Free For All sprouting up, you won’t find me complaining. The all free arts fest is happening October 8th and 9th in Tacoma’s historic theater district and features 75 performances spanning film, dance, theater, poetry and of course, music. The music line-up, housed in Tacoma’s Rialto Theater was curated by Aaron Stevens, who most of you best know as the boomingly beautiful male voice behind Goldfinch, but he’s done a hell of a job with this line-up. For just the cost of a short road trip or train ride south you can see Horse Feathers, Drew Grow and the Pastors’ Wives, Kelli Schaefer, Portland Cello Project, Pearly Gate Music, Sons of Warren Oates, a rendition of the Tacoma Round and more … and you don’t have to pay a dime to get in.

You DO have to have a wristband, which you can sign up for here. And you can RSVP for the event and follow announcements on the Fest’s Facebook page.

We’ve got the tentative music schedule after the jump, so start planning your road trip to Tacoma today. (more…)

Wild Flag – “Romance” [video]

by

With their debut record out today on Merge Records, Wild Flag just might be your new favorite band from Portland, or your new favorite band from Washington DC. They are charmingly punk, the fist they punch you with will have chipped red manicured nails. They are Portland whimsy and DC toughness combined in hook-heavy, chugging tunes you can’t help but sing and bop along to. Midway through a song, you notice you’re dancing with your elbows and a huge grin on your face. Their new video for the single track “Romance” shows off Wild Flag’s sneering adorableness, as does their band bio which reads “apt adjectives for describing the band’s music: wild. Also: flaggy.” When your songs are this catchy and your members have the kind of chops Brownstein, Weiss and bandmates Mary Timony and Rebecca Cole, you don’t have to take yourself too seriously. Your tunes speak for themselves.

Wild Flag is about to kick off a national tour this fall to celebrate their debut record and Sound on the Sound favorites, Drew Grow and the Pastors’ Wives will be joining them for part of it. See if Wild Flag and the Pastors’ Wives are coming to your town and if they are, don’t miss ‘em. Seattle, that means schedule November 11th for Wild Flag. Portland, the band will be playing two nights at the Doug Fir for homecoming shows on November 9th and 10th. Seattle, again, maybe we should road trip?

KEXP’s Concerts at the Mural Summer Line-Up

by

Since the weather’s not cooperating, we’re going to have to take cues from other places to remind us it is, in fact, summer. Things like a partial peek at KEXP’s always excellent free summer concert series at the Mural Amphitheater during the month of August.

There’s lots of Sound on the Sound favorites on the list – Pickwick, The Maldives, Ravenna Woods, Drew Grow & the Pastors’ Wives – but its the August 19th, all rock line-up that has me most excited. Headlining will be my favorite discovery of Sasquatch, Vancouver BC’s Black Mountain with two of the most solid rock bands in town, My Goodness and Whalebones, lending their support. Whether you’re in the front row (fingers crossed for a mosh pit) with me or in the very back of the beer garden, that’s a bill you’ll want to bring your ear plugs for.

August 5 – The Maldives, Hey Marseilles, Black Whales

August 6 – KEXP’s Summer BBQ: Fool’s Gold, Capsula, Virgin Islands, Mad Rad

August 12 – Seapony, Gold Leaves, Math and Physics Club

August 19 – Black Mountain, My Goodness, Whalebones

August 26 – No Depression Presents: Shane Tutmarc, Pickwick, Drew Grow & The Pastors’ Wives, Ravenna Woods

Tip of the Hat to SSG Music for the line-up.

A Bonus Doe Bay Session with Drew Grow and the Pastors’ Wives

by

Drew Grow and the Pastors’ Wives ::: photo by Josh Lovseth

Drew Grow and the Pastors’ Wives Doe Bay Session began under unexpected circumstances, which is par for the course for a band so creative and gifted, you never know what note is coming next. Setting up in the middle of the trail, Pastors Wife percussionist Jeremiah Hayden found a ladder in a nearby tool-shed and decided to play perched atop it for the bands first song. And just as the band began the wailing harmonies of “Bootstraps,” a small brass band began playing, the deep notes of a tuba reverberating off the Bay and trees. No matter the distractions, the band “played it loud and got it on,” resulting in one of our most unique sessions.

Drew Grow and the Pastors’ Wives play Chop Suey this Thursday with See Me River, Buffalo Deathbeam and The Foghorns as part of Noise for the Needy. You can buy your tickets here. And for our under 21 readers, the band is playing an all-ages show on Friday at Ground Zero Teen Center in Bellevue.

A Bonus Doe Bay Session with The Head and The Heart – “Sounds Like Hallelujah”

by

The Head and The Heart & the Doe Bay All-Star Choir

Last night 300 lucky Doe Bay ticket holders were told who they’d be seeing on Orcas Island in August and the last name announced was of this year’s headliners, The Head and The Heart. As the evening’s emcee Hannah Levin pointed out, the band is currently on their way to play Bonnaroo, a festival attended by 80,000 people, while this August Doe Bay Fest attendees will get to see the band with 800 friends.

Last year, as the sun set on the festival and the San Juans, we were lucky to be treated to a performance by The Head and The Heart and an All-Star chorus of Doe Bay guests including Drew Grow & the Pastors Wives and Kelli Schaefer, with about 20 people and we’re so excited to have one last video to share with you from that meant-to-be moment.

We’ll be sharing two more Doe Bay bonus sessions in the coming weeks from Hey Marseilles and Drew Grow and the Pastors’ Wives, as we prepare to shoot another round of sessions this August!

Great Bands, Great Cause: Noise for the Needy Line-Up Announced, We Help Present a Show!

by

nftn2011

Every year, Noise for the Needy is one of our favorite local events. A great local festival, for a great cause, this year’s Noise for the Needy will benefit Real Change Empowerment Project, the folks behind Real Change newspaper. Last year’s NFTN raised $25,000 for charity and this year’s fest with 80+ artists playing 21 shows will hopefully be just as successful. Tickets for most of the festival go on-sale Monday (May 2nd) at Noise for the Needy.

This year’s line-up is stacked with favorites: Hobosexual, Drew Grow and the Pastor’s Wives, Builders and the Butchers, Ravenna Woods, Youth Rescue Mission, Smokey Brights, Kelli Schaefer, Akimbo, Fly Moon Royalty and Land of Pines just to name a few. Sound on the Sound is also incredibly excited to be more than fans of the fest this year, as we’ll be presenting a showcase at Columbia City Theater on June 11th with Loch Lomond, Big Sur, Goldfinch, The Hoarde & The Harem and a DJ set from DJ Doo Right (who you know best as Seth from The Maldives).

The full line-up is below, we can’t wait to see you out and about in June seeing some great bands for a great cause.
