From moment one I knew Dita Vox was a rock star. The poster from $5 Cover Seattle makes me think movie star as well.
For me, an image of few people could be more iconic of my experience with the Seattle music scene than that of Dita Vox. (The first album I reviewed on Sound on the Sound was Can You Dig It?, after all.)
$5 Cover Seattle premieres next Monday (March 1st) at SIFF Cinema. Ms. Vox will be there and so will we. I’m looking forward to reporting back to you after seeing lots of our favorite stars from Seattle stages on the big screen. Dita may be the poster child, but she’ll be joined on screen by The Maldives, The Moondoggies, THEESatisfaction, The Lights and more. I can guarantee it’s going to be surreal to see, but I’m can also guarantee there’s going to be a great soundtrack.

A Wink from Dita Vox ::: photo by Abbey Simmons
This photo of Dita Vox of Thee Emergency may be my favorite picture I took from all of Reverb Festival. For me, concert photography is as much showing a mood as it is capturing a split second moment. Since you get a lot more chances at taking shots that portray a mood, that’s more my strong suit. So I’m especially pleased to have caught this, a perfect split second moment.

Thee Emergency at GMF ::: photo by Abbey
Throughout the year I think my favorite set of shots I took were during Thee Emergency’s epic set at Georgetown Music Festival. The above photo of Dita Vox and Nick Detroit may be my favorite single shot I took all year, where I couldn’t have gotten better light or movement if I’d set the shot up in a studio. Other stand-outs from Thee Emergency at GMF are posted below for your viewing pleasure.

Though you really shouldn’t need anything else to tempt you to attend tonight’s Common Market concert extraordinaire…I figure a few photos of Thee Emergency’s amazing performance at Bumbershoot couldn’t hurt.

Artist: Thee Emergency
Hails From: Seattle
Sounds Like: my favorite band in Seattle today — rock’n'roll swagger, heavy soul, and a bit of the blues
Latest Release: SOLID
Run From This Headliner to Catch Thee Emergency: The Black Keys
I try not to play favorites too much in any part of my life and if I have favorites, I attempt to be gracious enough to not mention it. However, when people ask me in absolutes who my favorite Seattle band is, the name instantly on my lips is Thee Emergency.
I love Thee Emergency because despite already being really really great at what they do, they still ooze unmined potential. The band is steeped in and reverent of all kinds of music, as made obvious by their eclectic recordings. The first Thee Emergency record was largely Detroit blues and punk, their most recent release SOLID was more psychedelic, and currently the band is recording a old school country album. And somehow, with each layer and incarnation, the core of Thee Emergency’s songs and performances improve. Singer Dita Vox has more sultry swagger in her little finger than the entirety of this years Bumbershoot line-up. And with a eager audience, epic venue, and huge sound system Thee Emergency is sure to put on one hell of a show this Sunday. There’s a lot going on that night, but this a show you won’t want to miss. Then, when they’re the biggest band in Seattle (it’s only a matter of time) you can say nostalgically “I saw them way back when…”
Thee Emergency play Sunday August 31st at the EMP Sky Church at 9:30-10:30pm

A few more of our favorite local photogs are hosting a wonderful show this weekend and we wanted to share the news (and gorgeous flyer) with you.
Hillary Harris and Kristen/Blush Photos are two of the most ridiculously talented and lovely women we’ve had the pleasure to meet in a long long time. The photos and portraits these ladies take speak to our soul and inspire us daily to expand our eye, viewpoint, and experiences as a photographer.
So take some time on your Saturday to support a few of Seattle’s most talented artists, Sound on the Sound is definitely going to try to make it to show our love and drool over some gorgeous photos.

The under 12 crowd in this town apparently have really good taste in music. Fuck Miley Cyrus they say, and give us Thee Emergency! Just take a look at a few photos from today’s Easy Street In-Store, which featured Thee Emergency’s youngest fans in droves.

The first battle of Operation Bright Pinkhas been fought, and won by Thee Emergency. Here is the photographic evidence of their triumph:

Yep, it’s true. Contained within Thee Emergency are also my favorite djs, as I discovered last Saturday at the debut of Seattle’s latest venue, King Cobra. Dita Vox and Sonic Smith of Thee Emergency were spinning the most amazing vinyl, introducing me to at least 10 bands that I need to take a closer listen to.
If you missed Dita and Sonic last week, and I know most of you did, because I didn’t recognize anyone at that bar…. they’re playing their records again tonight at King Cobra! If you’re a lover of rockandroll, go grab a drink and a seat for some loud and lovely listening.
