Recommendations: City Arts Fest on Thursday

The second annual City Arts Fest gets the weekend started early this Thursday with something for just about everybody: punk rock at the Comet, a soulful sold out show at The Triple Door, some of Seattle’s finest songwriters at the Showbox, a dance party at The Paramount and more.

We’ll be sharing our daily City Arts recommendations with you for the rest of the week. First, Thursday.

Long Winters, Campfire OK, Cobirds Unite, Cataldo at The Showbox:

Even if this weren’t The Long Winters only show in 2011 (it is), this show would still come with the highest recommendation. Not only is it a four-band bill of headliners, its also a showcase of some of Seattle’s most skilled wordsmiths. There’s a reason folks have been patiently anticipating The Long Winters next album for five years. John Roderick’s wit, wisdom and penchant for penning pop songs that burrow in your head and heart are worth waiting for. I’m particularly pleased with the pairing of Cataldo with The Long Winters, as Eric Anderson’s songs have filled my need for smart melodic melancholy in between spins of Roderick’s contemporary classics like “Shapes,” “Carparts,” and “Cinnamon.” Campfire OK, who is better every time I see them, and the power duo of Rachel Flotard and Rusty Willoughby as Cobirds Unite, only sweetens the bill. Strong Killings ::: photo by Josh Lovseth

The Cops, Birthday Suits, Nazca Lines, Strong Killings at The Comet:

Yeah, I know the Cops are “headlining” and everyone in Seattle everyone who pays utility bills can rally around the idea of Free Electricity. However, I’m here to give you the lowdown on what’s really shaking cool cat. Can you dig it? Don’t tell your friends, this is on the q-t, very hush hush Grab your muskets and prepare for a midnight ride to the center of the blogosphere. By the time we’re through, your fingers will be covered in gunpowder and blood (by hyper-tweeting and Facebook “liking,” of course). Onward young soldier, brace yourself what is about to come.

Strong Killings! Scream it from pit of your burning stomach. Possible “Album of the Year”?! Possible “Song of the Year”?!? Did I already mention this band is a “Live Performance of the Year” nominee? These are not requirements to perform on any stage of Seattle, let alone this cool festival. Yet Strong Killings have earned these purple hearts with years of practice and a blue-collar work ethic by eating the flesh of lesser bands and growing stronger from their unimpeeded cannibalism. ARGH. This is the best band that you don’t listen too, what the fuck. I can’t wait until your grubby hands are Tivo’ing their performance on Saturday Night Live while I’m homeless in an alley in some unnamed city, sucking dick for heroin but still managing to yell from the side of my mouth, “This blogger told you fuckers! Strong Killings!” Birthday Suits didn’t get here by cannibalism. No folks they got here by living in a van down by the river and living in a van and then living in a van again. Every time I wake up and walk down to the corner to grab a cup of coffee, this band is back in Seattle on-tour. I commend them, whatever vehicle they use to circumvent the earth and whatever is missing them back in Minneapolis. Who said that a two-piece can’t do what four-piece rock outfits can? Psshhhh. Now is not the time for Local H jokes, we’re in a war-zone soldier. If you like the Cops, the Blind Shake or any guitar driven rock with a danceable groove, this is your band.

Show starts at 9pm. (Phil)

Allen Stone ::: photo by Josh Lovseth

Allen Stone with Fly Moon Royalty at The Triple Door:

Single tickets for this fun & funky night at The Triple Door have already soul’d out, so you’ll have to have a wristband to attend. Considering The Triple Door may be the smallest room you see Allen Stone perform in for years to come (and the rest of the Fest line-up), we urge you to do so.

“Allen Stone cultivates a thick-rimmed suave, his toothy grin comes easy and he’s very interested in making sure everyone is getting “funked up.” His overwhelming enthusiasm is just that, overwhelming, and since it’s all in service of having a good time, it consumes the room in the best way possible.”

Other Excellent Thursday Night Options:

Cathedrals One featuring Bryan John Appleby, Mark Pickerel, Grant Olsen of Gold Leaves & More

by

There are two reasons I go to church: weddings and funerals. But thanks to the folks from The Fremont Abbey, it looks like I’m going to have to add a third reason: concerts. With incredible acoustics. By some of my very favorite artists.

On October 1st the folks behind The Round are taking their inspiring approach to supporting the arts out of Fremont to St. Mark’s on Capitol Hill for the first of a series aptly named “Cathedrals.” Described as a “contemplative concert series” aimed to bring “indie singer/songwriters in amazing large spaces,” the first edition of Cathedrals will feature performances from some of Seattle’s most buzzed about performers: Bryan John Appleby, Mark Pickerel, Grant Olsen of Gold Leaves, Mychal and Melodie of Campfire OK, Noah Gundersen and more. Guests are encouraged to bring blankets, pillows and their quiet voice to the all-ages performance. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. And as our friends over at Fuel or Friends in Colorado can confirm, Bryan John Appleby sounds mighty pretty singing his songs in a church:

As the name “Cathedrals. One.” implies, The Abbey has more of these contemplative concerts planned. Mark your calendar for Cathedrals. Two. they’ll host My Brightest Diamond at St. Marks on November 5th. You can already buy your tickets.

The Doe Bay Sessions 2011

by

Sallie Ford and the Sound Outside Doe Bay Session ::: photo by Josh Lovseth

It was 5pm on Saturday when we made our way down the trail to the point, the sunlight darting through tree branches, with Sallie Ford and the Sound Outside and a handful of their friends from Portland in tow to film their Doe Bay Session. We stopped at an uninhabited camp site, where the sounds of Campfire OK pouring their hearts out on the mainstage were muffled. As we began the rather painstaking process of setting up mics and getting the band situated for the best shot, a young family of three walked down the trail to their campsite, right next door to where we were shooting.

The little boy, Donovan, at all of five or six years old, got that wide-eyed look and smile that recalls Christmases past. When the present you wished for all year has suddenly appeared under the tree and you simply can’t believe your luck. Donovan, and his parents Adam & Eve, had returned to their campsite to break down their tent and head home. They’d come to see Sallie Ford and the Sound Outside, Donovan’s favorite band. and that was it. With Sallie’s mainstage set done, it was time for them to head on their way … but there we all were. Just a few feet away from their campsite, Donovan’s favorite band, playing a private show just for him on the trails of Doe Bay. He sat enrapt, elbows on his knee in the middle of the trail, watching intently, drinking in every moment quietly but with a huge smile.

It is our hope that these Sessions extend the magic of Doe Bay for all of you, the way the filming of the Sallie Ford Session did for Donovan and his family. Starting Tuesday September 6th, we’ll be sharing a Doe Bay Session every week for the next three months. We hope that they make the Festival last just a little longer, that you hear your favorite song once again or you’re introduced to a new one.

Huge thanks to the 12 bands who took time out of the relaxing and partying of Doe Bay to shoot with us: Bryan John Appleby, The Builders and The Butchers, Campfire OK, Champagne Champagne, Damien Jurado, Frank Fairfield, The Head and The Heart, John Vanderslice, Kelli Schaefer, Pickwick, Sallie Ford and the Sound Outside and Sera Cahoone. And thanks, of course, to our awesome crew: Tyler Kalberg, Chris Proff and Claire Yuckert, to the staff at Doe Bay Resort and Retreat and to the Festival organizers, Artist Home, for making this project possible.

We can’t wait to share 2011′s The Doe Bay Sessions with you very soon.

Last year we caught The Head and The Heart on this tiny stage and we’ll be back this year to catch Pickwick, Lemolo, Allen Stone and more. If you miss these small sets or the ones at the KEXP music lounge, don’t fret, both will be available as podcasts and archived streams on KEXP after the Fest is finished.

City Arts Magazine has announced the line-up for their second annual City Arts Fest, held this October from the 20th to the 22nd, and once again they’ve shown an upstart music festival can compete with the big boys in terms of star power. Big name national and international acts include: Robyn, Built to Spill, Ozomotali, Blackalicious, Crystal Castles and Ryan Adams. And, much to our delight, City Arts has mined some of the best of the Northwest as openers and headliners on their own including: Pickwick, Allen Stone, Mudhoney, The Long Winters, Cataldo, Campfire OK, Fastbacks, Fences, Smokey Brights, Bryan John Appleby, Joseph Giant, Grand Hallway, Lemolo and more.

And it’s not just music, there’s lots of local artists: poets, authors, dancers, filmmakers and more are featured. We’re especially excited to see our favorite local poet Kate Lebo on the schedule as well as a show billed as an All-Star Replacement tribute.

Driving the 5 and a Van Session with Campfire OK

by

Campfire OK ::: photo by Dylan Priest

Last year we sent local photographer and videographer Dylan Priest on tour with The Head and The Heart, Kelli Schaefer and Drew Grow and the Pastors’ Wives to get a behind the scenes look at life on the road and to film some impromptu videos. Last month Dylan packed his bags and hit the road with Campfire OK on a quick “tour” to Bellingham and Portland.

We’re happy to share photos from Dylan’s first day on the road with Campfire OK and one of two Van Sessions. Check back tomorrow to see another video and more photos from his adventure!
