Bumbershooting: Day Three

Dead Confederate ::: Photo by Abbey Simmons

Day Three of Bumbershoot 2009 was characterized by rain. A whole lot of it. Macklemore’s first show of the day on the Fisher Green Stage met the brunt of it, yet a thick contingent of fans kept their hands raised and swaying, oblivious to the wet. Even with the weather, the enticement of Cold War Kids, Franz Ferdinand, Modest Mouse and Metric all in one day was enough for a healthy number of fans to still brave the festival. Those who did were treated to great sets from both the night’s mainstage acts (including supposedly one of Modest Mouse’s better sets in Seattle, ever).

The Daily Choice: Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears - I’m Broke

Each and every morning for the last two months I’ve been slogging my way out of bed far before light hits the cracks of the cement, strolling in to the darkened tubes of the BART station and heading off to work.  The early hour, combined with the vagrants and shady characters I have to navigate to get to said BART station, puts a real damper on my day, especially as it’s a job I hate.

Luckily Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears exist.

Regardless of the stale scent of evaporating urine, the proferations of “cheap bud” and the general sense of unease I have being awake before the sunrises, Black Joe Lewis always gets my mind moving, my fingers tingling, my “booty” shaking.  It’s feel good music, a modern take on southern soul, and it is the perfect cure for morning malaise. Black Joe Lewis’s gravel-raked voice screaming “I’m broke” makes me want to dance-step my way down the street, jazz hands flailing, hairy mop shaking atop my head.
