The Daily Choice: Sweet Tea – If I Was A Carpenter

by

I like surprise.  Presents when I come home.  Finding twenty dollars in the pocket of a unworn coat.  You know, the little things.  Thus, when word that Alex Maas, the drone-y yaller from The Black Angels, and Erika Wennerstrom, the throaty holler of Heartless Bastards, were putting together a few tracks, I was nicely surprised.

The surprise continued (call it an avalanche of surprise) when the two song 7″ that was thrust in to my hands was a beautiful cover of one of my absolute favorite Cash and Carter songs, “If I Was A Carpenter”.  I nearly drowned in surprise when the song was a hazy, eyes-squinted take on the classic.  A take I couldn’t stop listening to.

I pass my pleasant surprise to you.  Enjoy.

The Daily Choice: Vampire Hands – Safe Word

by

I’ve been hankering to see this band Waavves for a while now, and when I found out they were playing on Monday I got a bit tingly.  And when I get tingly I get sort of OCD and start acquiring every bit of information and piece of music I can possibly find to prepare me for the upcoming event.  Thus, I’m digging through the back catalogs of the openers for the show and stumble upon Vampire Hands, a positively fantastic little goth-y psych rock band that well, I wanted to share with you.

This is Black Angels but bereft of the swaggering pulse, replaced with a sort of sad-eyed dirge.  It makes me think Southern Gothic for some reason, huge columns festered with mold but surrounded by pale-faced debutantes teetering at the edge of a world that no longer exists.  It’ll get under your skin, it’ll fill the space behind your eyeballs, and you’ll have to breath and breath deep to get it out.
