Elvis Perkins in Dearland at SXSW 2007 ::: Photo by Josh
A new Elvis Perkins song. Actually not a new one in the sense that it hasn’t been heard before. And actually not an Elvis Perkins song. The band has been taking to playing “Weeping Pilgrim” at their shows for a while now, and the classic folk song was re-recorded by Elvis Perkins in Dearland for a Sacred Harp Songbook compilation. Download it over at Heather’s place, I am Fuel, You are Friends.
A new Sea Wolf song too… Also courtesy of Heather. The song was created as part of a companion soundtrack that is inspired by the book it comes with, which is titled A Wolf at the Table. The song is called “Song for the Magpie.”
Stream it! Merge, the label for The Broken West, have a full album stream of the band’s latest full-length, Now or Heaven. The album officially arrives September 9. Listen here.
And another new band with a new album… Islands side-project Human Highway are streaming their new record in its entirety on their myspace. Moody Motorcycle arrives in stores next Tuesday, August 19.

Perusing the MySpace I found that The Broken West has posted a live recording of Big City from their recent show in Seattle, opening for The Long Winters. The recording quality is phenomenal and the band sounds amazing, better than their studio album.
Take A Listen Here

And if for some reason you missed The Broken West’s last Seattle show, make plans now to catch the boys on June 30th when they open for The National.

The Broken West continued my favorite new trend, amazingly talented and well matched opening acts. They opened for The Long Winter’s spectacular home-coming on April 14th and put on a hell of a show themselves. Their debut album, I Can’t Go On, I’ll Go On, is a pleasant offering of sun drenched California songs with a few notable stand-outs. The Broken West will be back in Seattle on June 30th, opening for The National.

It is my personal feeling that Seattle’s The Long Winters were the most overlooked band of 2006. Putting the Days to Bed became an instant classic at SOTS hq and even after listening to it to death, it’s still a go-to record when I can’t decide on anything else. Lead singer John Roderick is a wry comedian with a keen songwriting perspective that makes for entire records that are listenable, not just a few standout songs. And let’s be honest, who else could have written “Medicine Cabinet Pirate?” Nobody. He is a pop magician of the highest order. Recognize.
Opening up for TLW will be Portland rockers Stars of Track and Field, as well as the Broken West. Both bands have been gaining some recognition over the past few months, and each time I make a date to see one of them my plans are thwarted for some reason, so I am finally glad to get a chance to catch them both in the same place. There are still tickets to this show, but I wouldn’t count on it come Saturday night. We’ll have a posse in attendance for sure.

This week’s show of the week is this Friday (2/9) at Ballard’s very own Sunset Tavern at 10pm. The night’s music will be made by The Broken West, Heroes and Villans, and Seattle’s own The Maldives. The Broken West’s “So It Goes” is our myspace song for this week, and is definitely worth a listen (or nine).

I’m not sure that Heroes and Villans have a reference page…if the Myspace page that came up under a mispelling of the band is legitimate: it’s going to be a VERY weird night of music.
