If you put Hawaii in the title of a record I automatically assume that the album you’ve made is somehow connected to the islands. You might use slack key guitar, there’s problem a hint of lime-and-rum, perhaps your bassist wore a Hawaiian shirt while laying down the funk. The presence of the islands may be buried a bit deeper on Opossom’s Electric Hawaii, what with layers of vocoder and drum machine assaults hiding above it, but this is tropical like Panda Bear does tropical – the mellow rhythms and sand-soaked sounds injected with a blast of electricity. You may hear a touch of The Beach Boys in the vocals, perhaps the groaning synth at the heart of “Getaway Tonight” takes on the tone of a rum boat’s creaking timber, or perhaps with your feet shaking involuntarily beneath you, you’ll just feel a touch of that island relaxation tingling up your legs. Regardless, its there, somewhere.
