Great Pickathon write-up! This was my third year at this amazing festival and it has gotten more familiar and yet more magical every year. It's something we look forward to ALL year long. We purchase our tickets long before the line-up is every announced. We love it.

This was also my first year volunteering ... as a campground host. I know the festival organizers are working on ways to make the camping situation less stressful and more equitable for everyone. Campground hosts were an attempt at that and I'm sure we'll continue tweaking that system. Buying an early entry ticket is one way to improve your chances of getting a great spot. However there's actually tons of great camping to be found, even with a Friday arrival ... you may just have to be willing to hike a bit, or get creative on where you're willing to stick your tent.

But ... keep talking about how crummy camping is at Pickathon ... how it will RUIN your weekend. I don't mind the word NOT getting out about this fantastic festival. :)

Oh, I almost forgot, how did you miss the 1000+ person square dance with the Foghorn Stringhorn Band? That was certainly a highlight of the weekend for my fiance' and I. We heard them from our tent late Friday night and shot out of camp to see what the commotion was. Upon reaching the main stage, we were overwhelmed with the site of well over a thousand Pickathoners square dancing to the calls of the band. After watching for a song we couldn't help but join in. What a hoot.

I agree with everything you said. I too struggled finding a campsite, but I was in charge with setting 4 tents, not just one. My only gripe is with paying a $75 "early entry" fee, standing in line for 2 hours to get my early entry parking pass, only to find there were already hundreds of tents occupying the prime spots. I will write that experience off as a rookie mistake, and show up well before the advertised noon opening on Thursday next year.

We had a great experience finding a camping spot upon arrival. The staff offered to give us a ride on one of their little truck-carts, and drove us around till we found a spot, offering delightful conversation along the way. Every volunteer we encountered were so pleasant and nice... After experiencing Pickathon, I can see why.

I can't wait to go again next year.
