The Daily Choice: Mikal Cronin - You Gotta Have Someone

Mikal Cronin is growing on me.  Not in the this-will-be-on-my-end-of-year-list kind of growing, but in a everytime-this-album-pops-up-on-shuffle-I’m-pleasantly-surprised sort of growing.  For a while I was assured that Mikal Cronin was reinventing the Gin Blossoms wheel and I had to sit back and think “this is where we are in music huh? Right back at the front door of “Hey Jealousy?” And though I won’t back down that I think Cronin shares a few musical genes with the old Gin Blossoms, I’d say that his quirky brand of fuzzy, friend-rock is shaggy and enjoyable in an earnest, honest way.  ”You Gotta To Have Someone” doesn’t push those boundaries in any way, it’s just a big, warm slab of sweet sunshine.  And sometimes, even crotchety 29-year olds like myself, need a hit of Vitamin D.

“You Gotta Have Someone” is the b-side to Mikal Cronin’s new 7″ on Goner Records.
