The Daily Choice: Swiftumz - 4EVA

If I based my opinion on Swiftumz merely by the spelling of his name and the title of the first single of his that I’ve heard “4EVA”, I would’ve thought I was about to plug in to a dance-pop rapper aimed at 14 year old girls and their ilk. Luckily, and per usual, I’m very wrong. Swiftumz, a former song writer for Hunx and His Punx, transmute a similar energy found in the gay 80s punk rock of Hunx but swaps out some of the more doo-wop elements for the bouncy bassline of a more emotionally morose band like Joy Division (it angers me at all times that when I think of a certain era of music the only band I can think of, thus reference is Joy Division). The lyrics tend to speak of “loving you 4EVA” and paired with the melancholic, though chipper, bass beat, it makes you a little bit sad and a bit like a pigtailed 14-year old girl at the same time. Only in San Francisco huh?
Swiftumz’s Don’t Trip is out now on Holy Mountain.
