The Daily Choice: Bonnie Prince Billy & The Phantom Family Halo - Mindeater

I haven’t said much about Bonnie Prince Billy in a while, because though I love the prolific bastard, I haven’t found a release from him in a while that really jumped out at me. This collaboration with Louisville’s The Phantom Family Halo is that release. Prince Billy’s twanged out folk has been scaled back here and is replaced instead with a sort of late-night, forestal paranoia. BPB’s voice isn’t jubilant and full of country twang it’s creaky and worn, as if the fear of the outside world has left him tired and used. Perhaps a lot of this can be accredited to the presence of The Phantom Family Halo, a band I know little about, but seems to add a darker, spacier feel to the BPB show.
The track comes off of a super-limited 10″ entitled The Mindeater. It’s out on Sophomore Lounge now.
