Brittney’s Occasional Choice: Matters - “Get In Or Get Out”

MATTERS - Get In Or Get Out from Jared Raab on Vimeo.

Before John O’Regan was Diamond Rings, he fronted dance-punk group The D’Urbervilles. The D’Urbs have been quiet while Diamond Rings’ star has been on the rise, but this week they re-emerged with a new name, Matters, and a new single called “Get In Or Get Out.” Edgy, driving dance music is layered with Japandroids-esque garage noise to create something frantic and dark. “Are you ready now? / To get in or get out?” The mood of the song accentuates the haunting edge of John O’s baritone, and the video further builds on the anxiety, showing grainy scenes of secret missions and torture sheds and ending with a masked John O’s Joker-like grin. When the music stops, your heart beats loud, and the silence around is deafening.
