The Daily Choice: Battles - Ice Cream

I will admit its strange to hear a Battles track without the trademark croon of now departed Tyondai Braxton.  Honestly, everything up until the appearance of guest vocalist Matias Aguayo sounds like some permutation of a Battles song, but when the voice, all straightforward singing slaps you in the jowls, it’s another ball game altogether.  It isn’t bad, it’s just so strikingly different, it takes a moment to even realize the same band is playing.  Oh don’t you worry, a similar strain of electronic jamming spills out across the song, all sharp angles and sunshine, there’s merely a strong element lacking in the mix.  It almost feels as if Battles should exist as an instrumental band from this point forward. Step away from the days of Tyondai Braxton and forge on as a new entity.

Their new album Gloss Drop comes out on Warp on June 7th.
