The Daily Choice: Coma Cinema - Whatevering

On the surface “Whatevering” sounds like a road-trip jam, the sort of punchy, rhythm driven track you might toss in to the tape deck at the beginning of a journey to get the juices flowing, to steer yourself down the dusty backroads.  Listen closer to Mat Cothran’s sad, almost monotone lyrics about suffering and deprecation and a slow downward spiral and the song takes on new meaning.  This isn’t a wake-yourself-in-the-morning soft jam, this a well-hidden heartbreaker better suited for a long, deep cry in a dark corner than anything remotely involving energetic awakening.

That said, Coma Cinema might be my favorite discovery of the entire year and it’s not even February yet.

Coma Cinema’s new album Blue Suicide comes out on Wonderbeard Tapes (cassettes) and Fork and Spoon (vinyl).
