My Oh My: Macklemore Sells Out The Showbox in Under 48 Hours - Second Show Added!

It wasn’t but a couple of days ago that The Showbox announced on their Twitter that local emcee and Sound on the Sound MVP Macklemore would be making his first headlining appearance February 25th. Now it looks like The Showbox might need to consider giving Macklemore a second night, as he’s sold out one of Seattle’s biggest rooms in under 48 hours, before tickets even “officially” went on sale. (Update: ask and you shall receive! Macklemore and Ryan Lewis will be playing a second Showbox date on March 5th and tickets go on sale tomorrow at 10am.)

As pointed out (in 140 characters or less) by The Crocodile’s and scene guardian Kerri Harrop and confirmed by AEG’s Chad Quierlo, this puts Macklemore in an elite group of local artists with the ability to sell out such a room. The last local acts to sell out The Showbox in the same amount of time? Soundgarden reunion, Pearl Jam and Death Cab for Cutie.

Happily, this news is a perfect excuse to post Macklemore’s goosebump/sob inducing tribute track to beloved Mariner’s announcer Dave Niehaus. If you were raised on Mariner’s baseball and Niehaus’ signature calls like I was, I can say from personal experience: there’s not a chance this song won’t make you a little teary eyed. (After all, it mixes Niehaus’ classic 1995 ALDS winning call, which has been known to make most hometown kids misty at just a mention.)

And I’d like to think that even our dearly departed Dave Niehaus would agree: a local artist selling out the Showbox in under 48 hours is worthy of a “my oh my.”
