The Daily Choice: Vivian Girls - He’s Gone (The Chantel’s Cover)

I missed the Atlantic Steamer that is the Vivian Girls in typical me fashion. I’d heard from a friend that a performance at Nectar some years ago was off-key and ill-sounded in an un-amazing way and somehow, as I’m like to do, I let this insidious information wrap itself around my brain pan and really settle in for the long run. Damn you insidious information, damn you right to the hell you were born in.
This Chantel’s cover (the second African-American girl group to make it big in the 1950s) is brilliant, if not a greater ode to their inspirations then perhaps usual. Gone are these girls fuzzed out guitars and washed-away vocals. In their place stands a simplicity, a clean, direct harmony that infuses this classic bit of girl-group doo-wop with a chilly bit of near-winter sadness.
My heart, it sinks.
I apologize that I can only link you to their Myspace page. I hate this as much as you.

your friend wasn’t wrong Noah. I saw them at Bumbershoot and left scratching my head about why they are so beloved and popular. The sound was terrible and the songs weren’t anything that grabbed me by the gut.
I do, however, like the cover. You always manage to pick some real gems.
