The Daily Choice: The Feelies - Fa-Ci-La

It’s a wild time to be a music fan. With the fear of epic compact disc collapses lapping at the heels of record companies everywhere, there’s been a sort of, purging of the vaults. All of sudden, we the slack-jawed music fans of the world, are suddenly subject to not only the constant chilling barrage of new music, but also a tidal wave of reissues slamming down on the shores of aural experience.
It’s an uneven, oft times choppy ride, but sometimes, foamy waves clawing at your back, you look over your shoulder and there’s The Feelies smiling back at you. This is a new wave with a smile. Choppy, angular, sometimes aggressive, but never lacking a backbone of sort of pop-influence some of the colder, more meat-locker feeling music of the early 80s seemed to lack.
It’s cold but warm, like a hug from your large-chested stepmother.

I just realized I’ve been a fan of this band ever since seeing them play a fictionalized version of themselves in Johnathan Demme’s “Something Wild.” That was over 20 years ago. (The Feelies were also my first club show ever. fIREHOSE opened. Get off of my lawn.)
