The Daily Choice: Akron/Family - Last Year
Oh man, that might be the best band picture I’ve ever seen. This isn’t your stereotypical group of dour-faced musicians, leaned against a solid wall, clothes artfully torn, collars dutifully popped, oh no. This is just a bunch of friends, fresh from off the quarry wall, clad only in their skivvies, just making a day of it.
And there’s a certain air to that casual brilliance inherent in Akron/Family’s music. It’s somewhere between folk and psych and beautiful acoustic tomfoolery and I’ve been unable to tear my ear away from this short, but out so sweet little number, “Last Year” all morning. It might not capture exactly what I love about this band (their ramshackle take on a funky hootenany so present on their Dead Ocean’s debut Set ‘Em Wild, Set ‘Em Free) but it’s beautiful, and I dare you to try not to like it.
