The Daily Choice: Black Moth Super Rainbow - Born On A Day The Sun Didn’t Rise

Black Moth Super Rainbow has been a go-to, heavy rotation band for me since I came upon Dandelion Gum almost two years ago. There was a certain grit and grime to their askew form of electronica that ascended the mountain that was my hatred for electronic music. The creepy hum of Tobacco’s voice, the ebb-and-flow pulse of their sound, the general sunshine with a hint of meth feel I got from the music - I was hooked.
So I can say I’m happy that their releasing a new album, Eating Us, soon, but I mention this with trepidation. This newest album is the first where this group of mad-folk stepped in to a production space with a legit producer to tweak their sound. And though “Born On A Day The Sun Didn’t Rise” certainly feels like a BMSR track, you can feel a sheen of gloss that wasn’t there before. A sort of plasticky cover that heightens the pretty, and dulls the oily creep I loved so much.
I like it though, just with reservations.
