Since I wasn’t paying attention when it went up two weeks ago, today brings us the video for the lead single “The Truth” from Rhymesayer Jake One‘s 2008 collaborative debut release White Van Music. Featuring Freeway and Brother Ali, “The Truth” is just one of many songs that demonstrate his understated, almost minimalist approach to beat creation that allows whatever rapper he’s teamed with to really shine. Out of the locally produced hip-hop albums to come out this year that I’ve heard (and I admittedly haven’t heard many), White Van Music really stands out as the one that I will actually come back to again and again. While we haven’t talked about it much here, I expect to find it on a whole lot of year-end best-of lists.
