Halloween at the Skylark Cafe
WE as the Beastie Boys ::: Photo by Josh
Where ever this blog went this weekend it was packed and the Skylark Cafe in West Seattle was where it would all start. The “Come As You Aren’t” battle of the bands was the big event for this Halloween evening with more than ten bands choosing to dress up as one of their favorite bands, and then play three songs from that band’s catalog. We didn’t tough it out till the end of the long night as we could take feeling like a sardine only so long, but what we did see of the competition made it all worth it.
Winners of the night (we found out later) were WE Wrote the Book on Connectors masquerading as the Beastie Boys. Complete with a different costume for each song (and even a robot), WE went from “Sabotage” into “Intergalactic” into “Fight For Your Right to Party.” Instead of adhering to the three song rule, an overzealous M Bison as the Kinks thought they were responsible for 20 minutes, and put together a fast paced multi-song set, capping it off with a rousing edition of Lola. As it was reported to me, second place would go to Apple War’s rendition of Queen (which we sadly missed), while third would go to Bone Cave Ballet’s heavily appreciated performance of Duran Duran “Helen Chance’s electrifying portrayal of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.”

A small correction to your article, Josh… Helen Chance’s electrifying portrayal of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs took third place in a VERY close race for that position, narrowly beating out the Kinks and Nirvana (played by “H Is For Hungry Danielli”, a kickass all-lesbian quartet made up of three of my favorite local bands, one of them - Hungry Pines - sadly disbanded.)
Travis from WE/Beastie Boys ended up getting 28 stitches in his leg after his stage dive at the end of “Fight For Your Right” - and a subsequent four-hour hospital visit. WE won the Golden Cowbell by a landslide, with maximum points for style and musicianship from both judges (the Skylark’s Jessie S-K Russo and myself), along with the extremely valuable Bartenders’ Collective Vote.
It was a helluva night. Thanks for sticking it out as long as you did!
Cheers,
Matt

Hmmm, smells like douchebaggery on the 3rd place argument. Can we get word from another “judge”?
