Other Bumbershoot acts you might know that they’re akin to: Uh … Man Man?
Upon first perusal of this years, admittedly weak, Bumbershoot line-up I was drawn to one, and only one name: Man Man. I’d of paid 40 dollars for one day, merely to drink several 7 dollar beers and lay my eyes upon the the freak-folk-funk spectacular that is Honus Honus and the merry pranksters of Man Man. An equation: Tom Waits (the later years) + amphetamines (take your pick) + loose metal parts (shaken, not stirred) + doo-wop bass (that’s for the oogie-woogie) + an assortment of other, indescribable sounds and emotions (can’t pin-point everything about Man Man) = well, Man Man. And, really, here’s the thing, everytime you listen to this Philly based musical beast, you’ll find something new to adore, some new tinkle of falling nails, an explosion of fireworks, a new wrinkly in Honus Honus’s glass-ragged holler – something, and it’ll just keep dragging you back for more.
